The New Music Educational Project My Ancient Harp Playing [Contents]


Playing two strings
General: We will tune the second string - string No. a major second above string no. (the first string we played). First we will teach the students how to play two strings. We can gradually teach the two methods:
1) Strumming with a plectrum (easier and more comfortable) with the instrument placed on the player’s knees.
2) Guitar fingers-style using the right hand fingers (in right-handed students) with the instrument placed on its side. The two methods can be taught together, after which each player may choose the method he/she finds more convenient.

a.     Once we start playing two strings we already have two sounds. This enables us to create mini-pieces for single instruments to which we can add the effects of tapping and strumming the short parts of the string.

  a) Suggests a simple phrase which is to be played repeatedly:
The teachers may accompany this phrase using a melodic or harmonic instrument.

b) Once the class has mastered this phrase it may be divided in two, each half being played alternately by a different group:


c) Playing with accompaniment:
A piece which we will accompany using a harmonic instrument.

We will play it about 4 times and end it with a tremolo on string no.
